Travel Tips for Ottawa

With its rich history, diverse culture and charming old buildings surrounded by picturesque scenery, there’s something for everyone in Canada’s capital city.

Start by touring the home of Canada’s federal government, Parliament Hill. Explore the historic gothic-style buildings overlooking the Ottawa River and if you’re lucky you can attend a live debate in the Senate or House of Commons Chamber. While visiting Parliament Hill, you mustn’t forget to check out its most dominant feature, the Peace Tower. Whether you head inside to observe its beautiful high ceilings, stained glass windows and stone arches, or climb to the top and witness its extravagant views of the city, this symbol of Canada is not to be missed.

Another notable building you’ll want to add to your travel itinerary is the official residence and workplace of the governor general – the Crown’s representative. Located steps from Ottawa’s downtown core, this historic mansion is a sight to see! Take a guided tour of its beautiful interior and walk through the state rooms where the governor general greets dignitaries, receives heads of state, and presents Canada’s highest honours. After you’ve explored indoors, head outside to the surrounding park and stroll through its winding paths where you’ll find an inukshuk, totem pole and arc of roses.

Ottawa is also famed for its vast collection of museums. For the history buffs, there’s the Canadian Museum of History or the Canadian War Museum. Art Aficionados, check out the National Gallery of Canada or the Ottawa Art Gallery.

If you’re brave enough to visit Ottawa during its frigid winters, you’ll be rewarded with a handful of festivals and events exclusive to the snowy months. Each winter, the Rideau Canal transforms into the world’s largest outdoor ice-skating rink. Hit the rink, stretching all the way from downtown Ottawa to the Hartwell Locks, and when you’re done, warm up with a cup of hot cocoa.

Ottawa is also home to a spectacular winter festival known as Winterlude! For the first three weekends in February, you can marvel at beautiful ice sculptures, slide-down slick ice slides at Snowflake Kingdom, and discover local foods.

If you can’t muster up the courage to face Ottawa’s icy winters–that’s okay! They also have an abundance of events in the warmer months. In fact, each May, the city celebrates their official flower at the world’s largest tulip festival.  Over 11 days in May, the Canadian Tulip Festival features massive multicoloured tulip displays, a tulip boutique and fireworks.
